Senior Ladies Footballers through to Semi- Final!

SMGS 8-9 Beara 2-11

SMGS senior ladies football team have had a rocky start to their season but made up for their defeat to SMI Newcastlewest, Limerick, by being victorious to teams like Mitchelstown, Carrignavar and Beara. This panel of girls have shown great commitment to the schools football team and have played with great skill and determination during every match.

The last match played by our senior team was against Beara in the Munsters Schools quarter final on Monday 27th November. The team travelled to Dunmanway, West Cork, to play Beara in bitter conditions.

SMGS took the lead within the first few minutes with Eve Mullins opening up the lead with SMGS's first goal, followed shortly with an inspiring goal by Aoibhin Barry. Throughout the first half, SMGS proved that great teamwork shows on the score board. Other scores from the likes of Danielle Hendley, Eimear O’Reilly and Aideen Donovan put SMGS in a  great position. Beara ended their first half with one goal and five points but could have been more if it wasnt for the tough Blarney back line and Karen O’Farrell at the heart of it. The half time score was SMGS 5-3 to Beara’s 1-5.

Again Blarney started strong in the second half with the opening score by Claire Ahern. The Beara side came back fighting getting 1-6 which put SMGS in a tight position. Beara pushed up on Blarney’s backline which put pressure on Blarney’s kickout creating stress for Anna B. Murphy. The Blarney girls drove on getting 3-6 in the second half showing great determination. Players, from Blarney, that stood out were Fiona Bourke, Aideen Donovan, Eve Mullins, Claire Ahern, Saoirse Kiely and Karen O’ Farrell.

The Blarney Girls will be playing their semi-final after the Christmas holidays.
