School Uniform

The school uniform must be worn correctly at school, travelling to and from school and at all school functions. Students wearing the SMGS uniform represent the school to the wider community and are expected to behave in a manner which will not bring the school into disrepute. Please remember to put the student’s name on all of their clothing and equipment.

in the Main Reception of the New School Building

Uniform

  • Boys wear grey school trousers, blue and white striped shirt, wine coloured tie and blue jumper with school crest.

  • Girls wear grey school trousers or a grey A line skirt. They also wear a blue and white striped shirt, wine coloured tie, and blue jumper with school crest. No leggings flared or stretch trousers will be accepted. The skirt MUST be knee length and worn with thick black tights. The approved skirt is only available from Buckley’s of Shandon Street and has the SMGS logo embroidered on it. Skirts that do not comply will not be accepted.

  • Shoes must be plain black with no obvious branding, stripes or decoration. Dubarry deck shoes are also allowed.

  • The school jacket is compulsory for all 1st Yr. students in 2023/24. It is recommended, but not compulsory for all other year groups. No jackets to be worn in the school building.

  • Hoodies are not allowed while in school uniform. Coats, jackets, sweatshirts and PE ¼ zips are not permitted to be worn in the school building. The PE ¼ zip top is not a substitute for the official school jumper.

  • The school tracksuit is only to be worn by students on the day their P.E. class is timetabled, apart from when permission is granted by Management.

  • SMGS training gear is not a substitute for either the official school or P.E. uniform and should not be worn in place of either.

  • Students involved in extracurricular activities MUST be in full PE uniform or full school uniform before & after activity.

  • Medical certificates must be supplied in incidents of injury etc. which may necessitate a student wearing a tracksuit.

  • Students in breach of the Uniform and Appearance Policy MUST have a note of explanation from a parent/guardian in their student journal / have an email submitted by a parent/guardian to uniform support.

  • The class teacher notes uniform issue in first class on VSware, assigning issue to the appropriate teacher (i.e. junior vs senior). Student MUST go directly to Snr/Jnr Uniform teacher at 09:55am in Study Hall G 39 where the issue will be dealt with.

  • In cases where the situation cannot be immediately corrected, a reasonable time frame given to correct the situation. Failure to present at the uniform check at small break-time will result in an immediate detention. 

 

Appearance

  • Students may wear up to three ear piercings in each ear but must keep it to studs during school hours. No hoops allowed. Students are allowed a maximum of two rings on each hand and are allowed one small, discreet nose stud, not a ring. Excess piercings and jewellery must be removed, will be confiscated and will not be returned until the end of term.

  • Make up, fake nails, fake eyelashes and fake tan are not allowed. Tattoos are to be covered at all times.

  • Hair should be clean, neat and tidy. Dyed hair must be limited to one colour and must not be vibrant. Distracting hairstyles eg. Mohawks are strictly forbidden. The Principal / Deputy Principals will decide as to the acceptability of any particular haircut. The parents of pupils with unacceptable haircuts will be contacted with a view to taking the student home to rectify the hairstyle.

 

Physical Education

P.E uniform consists of navy SMGS tracksuit pants, ¼ zip SMGS top, matching tee shirt and runners with built in arch support. A cross trainer is a good all round runner.

 

The PE uniform is compulsory for all PE students and TYO students. 

If a student is unable to participate in P.E., a written explanation from a parent / guardian must be presented to the P.E. teacher prior to class. 

A doctors cert is required by the school should a student be unable to participate in P.E. for a period of more than 3 weeks.
